where do you go to learn about meters, meds, foods? is sugar alcohol the same as refined sugar to a diabetic?

Here is a good jumping off point in the new world of diabetes, http://www.battlediabetes.com/. While you are probably super overwhelmed at the moment, realize that you aren't expected to be an expert overnight or even in the first few months. Take your time going over all the information out there and make your own health plan along with your doctor.

Drinking and the way it is metabolized can raise your blood sugar, it does depend on how much and what you drink, but I would say since you are so new to this, drinking my need to be shelved while you are learning how to simply eat in a way that is healthy to your body.

Let me know how this goes for you.

why isn't your dr's office educating u so u feel comfortable with your condition ? they should have and educater on staff and if they don't a nurse should help if the dr doesnt ..in addition a nutritionist can always assist u if u r able to afford it since their traning specifically deals with these type of issues and as a last resort ask your pharmacist for tips .it's very irresposible that your dr would send u or the person u r concerned about on their way without a vast amount of knowledge .. i no this as my husband suffers from type 2 diab and would b very sick without the proper care .. good luck to u .

Ok no one her from what I see really answered your questions. Yes your Dr office should have a C. D.E on staff and they will teach you first hand on meters.
www.freestyle.com you can get a card to help (for free) with cost of your stripes. And a free C.D.E. support. I tell all the people in my support group even if they don't use the meter it is great to have the free CDE. also www.dlife.com is a good site.
Now lets address this one sugar alcohol No it is not the same. google it. It will not jump your numbers like real sugar. hope this helps
