Kids with type 1 diabetes
I am 44 now and was diagnosed when I was 2. So had a lifetime of it!!! Pleased to say that I still have all functions working normally. No long term complications and a full beaming smile and happy soul at least 99% of the time. You got to have some bad times otherwise you would not be able to compare to the good times. You mentioned as if you feel there is no one to reach out to yet here we are with two comments so as you reach out people will reach to you...I just wrote an article the other day on diabetes that can be found here:- http://jsaggs.hubpages.com/hub/I-D-D-M
Here though is a quick list of diabetic friendly snacks that your 10 year old can enjoy.

It is impossible to list all the food carbohydrates here so I have elected to make a list of snacks which contain little to no sugar what so ever, so can be enjoyed without the fear of hyperglycaemia occurring. CP=Carbohydrate Portion.

Hi I was dx at 15 and yes it was hard and still is. Make sure your son carries glucose tablets or some fast acting sugar with him at all times because when I was in school getting from one class to the next would drop my sugar and any physical activity like sports. Good Luck to you and your son it will be difficult but you ll get through it
My son Braydon has type 1 diabetes we found out when he was 4 He is now 5 and we still struggle its manageable but still seems like it only gets harder instead of easier <3 I wish I knew of another child living in Portland Oregon that he could relate to He has never met a kid with Diabetes....

Dear ccruz,
I was 8 when I was diagnosed and it is a HUGE adjustment. Even though I do not remember many of the moments from my diagnosis, probably because I do not want to remember it, but it does get easier!! As your son gets older and takes control for himself, he will be able to count carbs as easily as speaking. I do not need to count that often, since I eat consistantly and I know what everything has in it. Unfortunately for me, there was not many people to help me get through this transitional phase, but there are others out there and I will try to check back here as much as I can to help you get through this. If you need anything, I will try my best to help.
